Toronto's own public health guidance reflects this shift in thinking. The City of Toronto's position statement on artificial turf recommends that new installations use alternative infill materials or less solar-absorbing materials where available, rather than defaulting to crumb rubber made from recycled tires. For school boards making purchasing decisions in a climate of increased parent and staff scrutiny, that kind of institutional guidance carries real weight.

This doesn't mean crumb rubber is unsafe, the research is genuinely mixed, and plenty of fields using it have operated for years without documented health issues. But for schools and universities, where the audience is children, teenagers, and a public that asks hard questions, choosing an infill with a cleaner profile is one less conversation administrators need to have at a parent council meeting.
